HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL SHUTTERS

Have you just purchased some beautiful shutters that will help your home look lovely, help you control light, and get you some more privacy? While we do recommend that you use professional shutter services to ensure that your shutters come in, you can install shutters yourself. If, for some reason, you can’t get your Oakville shutters professionally installed, here is a step-by-step guide to installing your Oakville shutters successfully.

Measure Your Windows & Order

The most important step of installing shutters (and blinds) is measuring. Measure each window individually, even if you believe two or more of them are identical. Then make your order for your shutters to arrive in Oakville.

Tools You’ll Need

Here are the tools that you’ll need to install your shutters:

  • Drill
  • 1/8 inch drill bit
  • Combination square
  • Screwdrivers

How to Install the Shutters

  1. Install the hinges: Lay the shutters on their side, hinge side facing up. Install the hinges, keeping in mind that the bars should face the room when the shutter is closed. Place the hinges on the shutter, and drill pilot holes into the shutter with the drill. Then add the screws (which likely came with the shutters) with the right screwdriver. Repeat until all of the hinges are attached to all of the shutters.
  2. Install hanging strips: Your shutters should have arrived with strips that you install in the window. These strips then connect to the hinges on the shutter. Simply place the strips into the window and attach them to the window jamb. You may want to check that the shutters and hinges will fit by holding them up to the hanging strips before you secure them.
  3. Mark the hinges: Now hold the shutters up to the window jamb. Have your helper do this while you mark the spot for the hinges to be attached to the window jamb.
  4. Attach the shutter: Predrill holes where you have marked. Then have your helper hold up the shutter while you add the screws.
  5. Add catch magnet: If there is a catch magnet included with your shutters, then you need to add it at the bottom of the shutter, where it will “catch” as you close the shutter. Hold the magnet mechanism on the shutter and close the shutter. Make sure that it will close all of the way where the magnet is placed. Then mark it and screw it in place.

Beautify Your Home with Attractive Window Coverings

Window coverings and treatments are major interior design considerations that can significantly impact the look and overall comfort and ambiance of your home space. With the great array of window treatment options that you can choose from, it can be quite overwhelming to find the perfect product and design that will bring out the best in your space and help you achieve your goal—be it to create privacy, block light, or simply make your space look beautiful. Whether you need window shutters or something more cozy like curtains or drapes, window treatments are great additions to a home and are about the easiest way to update your interiors or give it a quick transformation and change of tone or ambiance.

Curtains and drapes can range from fun and casual to more formal and sophisticated. These window coverings are often regarded as unsung heroes when it comes to interior design as they help create very specific motifs to rooms. Not only are they excellent decorative tools—they are also extremely functional and versatile as they can filter out heat and light as well as provide privacy from the curious gazes of your next-door neighbor. Curtains and draperies come in a wide range of styles and forms from traditional drape down curtains to panels, and thermal/blackout drapes to sheer curtains and tiers.

Shades and blinds are also ideal for those who want a sleeker and more modern look. These kinds of window treatments add a nice minimalist touch to a room. Like curtains, they provide the same function of blocking out light and maintaining privacy to a room. Blinds and shades are typically made up of continuous fabric pieces or some other type of material that can be rolled up or down using a pulley mechanism.

Those looking for a more classic look can always go for window shutters, which offer a more permanent window treatment and therefore require long-term commitment. Shutters can be installed indoors or outdoors, depending on your need and/or preference.

Milton Blinds offers a wide range of window covering solutions for homes, depending on the type and style of shade and protection you want and need. The company also offers commercial blinds and products on top of residential options to help home and business owners control the comfort and privacy of their space.
