USING SHUTTERS TO ENHANCE THE AESTHETICS OF A BUILDING

Shutters are a great option not just to add function to your home but also add style, enhance curb appeal, and potentially even boost the value of your home. But you have to add the right style and color of shutters to make the most of this opportunity. Learn how shutters can enhance your building’s aesthetic and some mistakes to avoid, such as adding fake shutters.

Shutters Emphasize Your Home’s Style

Many different styles of shutters harken back to older home styles. For example, California shutters in Milton are associated with southern plantation homes. Adding these shutters can help restore the historic look of your home. Or, they can add a sense of history and gravitas to a home that’s more on the modern side. You just have to be careful about what style you add to what kind of home. We can help you select the right style with a personalized in-home consultation with one of our experts.

Shutters Help Achieve Visual Balance

When your windows have properly sized shutters flanking them, they add balance to the windows and make them look bigger. This is one reason that you should install real shutters, which have to be half of the size of the window, each, to work. This creates a pleasing visual harmony.

Highlight with Shutters

When you think of California shutters, you think of lovely white accents to your home. White is a great choice for modern homes, and we carry various shades of it to fit your décor style. Get your shutters to match your door and garage to add that color throughout the rest of the home’. Shutters can allow you to accent the other colors of your home that help it stand out in Oakville. If you know that you want to add some flair, but are afraid that you won’t make the right choice, don’t worry. We offer in-home consultation services with our design team to make sure you get that professional look every time.

Why Not Add Fake Shutters?

Fake shutters can look good in some circumstances, but they can also be a big faux pas. Big windows with small shutters can look odd. It can also look odd to have blinds or curtains on windows that have fake shutters. You also won’t get the benefits of real shutters when you choose a fake version, including light control and privacy. You’ll get more value from real shutters than fake ones. If you’re worried about pricing, we have a range of materials available to match your budgetary needs.

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL SHUTTERS

Have you just purchased some beautiful shutters that will help your home look lovely, help you control light, and get you some more privacy? While we do recommend that you use professional shutter services to ensure that your shutters come in, you can install shutters yourself. If, for some reason, you can’t get your Oakville shutters professionally installed, here is a step-by-step guide to installing your Oakville shutters successfully.

Measure Your Windows & Order

The most important step of installing shutters (and blinds) is measuring. Measure each window individually, even if you believe two or more of them are identical. Then make your order for your shutters to arrive in Oakville.

Tools You’ll Need

Here are the tools that you’ll need to install your shutters:

  • Drill
  • 1/8 inch drill bit
  • Combination square
  • Screwdrivers

How to Install the Shutters

  1. Install the hinges: Lay the shutters on their side, hinge side facing up. Install the hinges, keeping in mind that the bars should face the room when the shutter is closed. Place the hinges on the shutter, and drill pilot holes into the shutter with the drill. Then add the screws (which likely came with the shutters) with the right screwdriver. Repeat until all of the hinges are attached to all of the shutters.
  2. Install hanging strips: Your shutters should have arrived with strips that you install in the window. These strips then connect to the hinges on the shutter. Simply place the strips into the window and attach them to the window jamb. You may want to check that the shutters and hinges will fit by holding them up to the hanging strips before you secure them.
  3. Mark the hinges: Now hold the shutters up to the window jamb. Have your helper do this while you mark the spot for the hinges to be attached to the window jamb.
  4. Attach the shutter: Predrill holes where you have marked. Then have your helper hold up the shutter while you add the screws.
  5. Add catch magnet: If there is a catch magnet included with your shutters, then you need to add it at the bottom of the shutter, where it will “catch” as you close the shutter. Hold the magnet mechanism on the shutter and close the shutter. Make sure that it will close all of the way where the magnet is placed. Then mark it and screw it in place.

WHY INCLUDE CALIFORNIA SHUTTERS IN YOUR DREAM HOME?

There are a lot of decisions to make when you’re designing your dream home. There are thousands of options to choose, from the exterior materials to the flooring. At some point, you might encounter some decision fatigue. When it comes to choosing your blinds, we think you should pay special attention. Blinds and shutters can define your home stylistically, and they can dramatically change your comfort in it too.

There are a lot of blinds and shutter types to choose from. But one of the best choices for a dream home is California shutters. Here’s why these shutters might work for your custom home.

What Are California Shutters?

California shutters are a variant of plantation shutters that are more popular in Canada. Plantation shutters are wooden blinds with small slats. They fit inside of a wooden frame that is then placed inside your window. The slats are also called louvres.

The biggest difference between plantation shutters and California shutters is the louvre size. On California shutters, the louvre size is smaller. That means there are more slats per frame. This more compact look offers more privacy and a better ability to block out the sun when you need to keep your home cool.

Why Choose California Shutters?

There are many stylistic and practical benefits to these shutters:

  • Elegance: These shutters feel elegant and elevate the spaces they are placed in. They may remind you of old manor houses in the south or California, and that elegance will be apparent to your guests too.

  • Modern: Because they have clean lines, and are often painted white or other light colors, these window shutters are a perfect choice for a modern space. Of course, you can get them in any color that will suit your custom home design.

  • Longevity: These shutters last longer than blinds and some other shutter types because they are made of quality wood and installed directly in the frame. If you’re focusing on making your custom home a high quality, choosing shutters that will last makes sense.

  • Ease of Use: These shutters are simple to use and can be closed and opened simply, so you can let light in when you like, and get privacy and shade just as easily.

  • Light Control: Shutters do a better job of keeping light out than blinds do. This can help you protect your home’s new furniture, rugs, and carpeting from fading.

  • Temperature Control: Even though natural light is beautiful, in the middle of summer, it can be your worst enemy when it comes to your energy bill and your personal comfort.

WINDOW SHADES: A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO CONTROL LIGHT AND PRIVACY

Light can change how you experience your home very dramatically. Everyone has experienced the annoyance of getting a glare on your screen while you’re trying to watch something or play a game. Perhaps you’ve also had the desire to keep the lights on while it’s dark out, but felt exposed to those outside your window that you cannot see? Controlling light can even be a practical matter. In the intense Oakville summer, allowing the sunlight into your home can significantly raise its temperature, meaning your air conditioner must work harder.

How do you get more control over your home and how you feel in it? Quality window shades from a trusted provider in Oakville are the solution. They beautify your home while giving you a say in how much light and heat you let into your home. Here are some window shade types you should consider and how they can help you control light and privacy in your home in Oakville.

Roller Shades

These are an affordable and simple way to dress your windows. Unlike other options, these shades are made of one sheet of material, without gaps. Their main advantage is simplicity. You just pull them down to close them, and that’s it. They do not need to be closed all the way, so you have some control over how much light you let into your home.

Roman Shades

Also constituted of a single piece of fabric, they fall differently than roller shades. Flat roman shades hang straight, under their own weight, with elegance. Relaxed, or soft roman shades have a curve at the bottom instead of straight line. They have much the same light and privacy control as roller shades, but with an added flair. These shades can have all manner of patterns on them if you wish, so feel free to let us know what you would like to add to liven up your windows and bring your own personal touch to another aspect of your home.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds give you more privacy and light control than shades because you can adjust how open they are. When they are half closed, vertical blinds provide privacy, but also allow partial light into the space. If you want to close them all the way, quality vertical blinds can provide something close to blackout, so that very little light, if any, gets into your space. It is ideal for movie night in your living room or playing a fun game on the TV together!

BLINDED BY TOO MUCH LIGHT? GET VERTICAL BLINDS

Why are vertical blinds so popular in Canada? Even in winter, our sun can be very harsh. Vertical blinds give homeowners the most flexibility they need to enjoy just the right amount of light in their home, regardless of the season or the time of day. Learn more about the options that vertical blinds open up for you in Oakville, ON. When you’re ready, you can contact us or book an in-home consultation.

The Many Ways to Use Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds have more positions than other window dressing options, giving you more control over the light. Of course, you can have vertical blinds extended across the whole window or door and closed. With our blackout blinds, you can significantly reduce glare in your space—an excellent option for shift workers and those who love to indulge and sleep in.

Another option is to open the blinds but keep them drawn across the window or door. This allows light in but still offers some privacy from prying eyes outside. You can choose between open and halfway open to maximize privacy or light.

Of course, a unique feature of vertical window blinds is that you can draw them back. Whether open, closed, or half-open, you can pull these blinds back, so they only cover half or less of the space, allowing you greater control over how your windows look and the amount of light they let in. This is a great option to allow sun into your space but still block glare or provide shade where you need it. We can design and install your blinds so that they can add protection from the light exactly where you want or need it. All our design solutions are custom to your unique needs as a home or business owner.

Simple to Repair

Light control for the long, long term depends on how simple your window dressing solution is to repair. Eventually, something with happen to the blinds or shutters to cause a gap that lets light in. At Milton Blinds, we can repair vertical blinds very simply if one of the vanes (the vertical sheets) has been chewed up by your dog, bent when you moved furniture, or broken by a cat that got a little too curious.

Vertical blinds can be relatively small or large, with a maximum of 12 inches in width and 144 inches in height. We can measure, and color match your existing blinds and provide vanes or a full replacement to keep the look that you love so much.

3 REASONS TO CHOOSE PATIO DOOR BLINDS

Is your patio door looking a little bare? Do you find it gets too hot when the sun beats down during the summer months? Maybe you want a window dressing to add color and style to space. Or, perhaps you want more privacy. There are many reasons to choose sliding patio door blinds to fill this spot in your home. If you’re not sure what will work for you, you can contact us or book an in-home consultation.

Here are three of our top reasons to select sliding panels for your patio door in Oakville.

1. Superior Convenience

Have you ever tried opening a closing a door with a curtain on it? Especially on exterior doors, sudden gusts of wind and normal air movement blow many window dressings into the door. It becomes a hassle to open or close the door because the fabric is always getting in the way. Sliding panel blinds are rigid, so they don’t succumb to the wind. They stay out of the way when you open and close the door, making them the right choice for this use.

Plus, blinds are simpler to clean than drapes and other options. All you have to do is close them and run your duster over them. Drapes need to be removed from the door and run through your washing machine, potentially even ironed!

2. Privacy without Darkness

When you’re inside, do you feel like someone could be peeking in your glass patio door? If you have a small or permeable fence, or the neighbors behind you have a two-story house, you may be concerned about privacy. Sliding panels are great options to get some privacy without necessarily limiting the natural light that the door brings into your space. Sliding patio door blinds can be made of thin but opaque material that allows in a lot of light but blocks the entire view. Compare that to vertical blinds, which block a lot of light unless they are at least open a bit.

3. Modern Style & Options

Panel blinds are one of the most stylish, modern options for your patio door. They’ve come into vogue because they’re simple and can have a plentiful range of styles. They can also add texture to your space. Plus, the natural light is a huge benefit for modern interior décor. Who doesn’t love to let the light into their space a little and enjoy the sun?

Even the simple way that sliding panel blinds opens is stylish. No more fumbling with cords. Instead, pull back the whole panel when you want to get some light or walk outside.

Get Inspired with Milton Blinds

No space is complete without blinds because they contribute so much to an area. If you’re in Oakville, you can discover your options for patio door blinds by exploring our gallery or contacting us today, or if you prefer an in-person consultation, we’re happy to stop by and be your personal home design professional!
